About Lovedale TVET College

Lovedale was founded in the tiny hamlet of Alice in 1824. Lovedale was founded by Glasgow Missionary Society of Scotland’s John Bennie, under the guidance of Dr. John Love, after whom it bears its name. The old Zwelethemba Technical College in Zwelitsha, Lovedale Community College in Alice, and the East London College satellite campus in King William’s Town came together to become Lovedale TVET College. Lovedale was given its name due to its illustrious political and intellectual past.

The three mentioned colleges united to become Lovedale Public FET College in 2002, after a national merger of 152 technical colleges into 52 mega-colleges. The colleges’ names were changed from Further Education and Training (FET) to Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges when they were absorbed into the Department of Higher Education in 2015.
