What does the term Nated Mean? NATED stands for National Accredited Technical Education and Training and it represents an important aspect of Vocational education in South Africa. The Department of Higher Education and Training designed each National Qualification course to train students for the workplace.

The programs consist of 18 months of theoretical studies at colleges and 18 months of relevant practical application in workplaces. Engineering studies range from N1-N6 while Business and Utility Studies range from N4-N6.

Who is Eligible For NATED?

Anyone who has passed their Matric Can study. You can study a National Qualification (NATED) course if:

  • You have a Matric certificate with a Higher Certificate Pass.
  • You have a Matric certificate with a National Senior Certificate Pass.
  • You want to focus on career-based learning.
  • You have a Matric equivalent certificate.
  • You have a Matric certificate with a Bachelor’s Degree Pass.
  • You have a Matric certificate with a Diploma Pass.

Is a NATED Qualification right for students?

This qualification is intended for students who wish to advance their competencies in a particular occupational or vocational field and who are exceptionally competent in that field. The technical and theoretical knowledge, as well as the workplace knowledge and abilities necessary in the chosen professional or vocational sector, are developed in the students pursuing this certificate. How to Apply for a NATED course

Application for Nated Diploma Programmes is done a year ahead of the intended year of study for Semester 1. Semester 2 applications open in April/May and classes commence in July after the semester break.

Minimum Entry Requirements

Students intending to pursue any one of the Nated Diploma Programmes need to have a Grade 12 Certificate or be currently in grade 12 during the year of application. Minimum entry requirements are as follows.

School of Business

A student must have a minimum of 23 combined points (points must exclude Life Orientation) to be considered in any of the Business Studies programs. Who Qualifies For Nated

School Of Engineering

A student needs to have 40% and above for both Mathematics and Physical Sciences to be considered for this program. Please note that students with Mathematical literacy will not be considered for Engineering no matter the percentage pass.

Duration of NATED course in college

Programs offered by Nated include both theoretical and practical components. During 18 months, the student completes three levels of the theoretical component, namely N4, N5, and N6. The learner will get a certificate after finishing each of these stages. The completion of each level takes six months. Only after completing the theoretical and practical components will students receive a National Diploma Certificate.
